Stop Alzheimer’s Now
By Bruce Fife, N.D.
Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, ALS, Multiple Sclerosis, Diabetes, and many other forms of neurodegenerative disease, are increasing at a very alarming rate. Unfortunately future predictions concerning this frightening trend are not very encouraging. Does this mean that a further decline in health is inevitable and that there is nothing we can do about? I believe there is plenty we can do if we will begin to look for the root causes of our problems.
Dr Fife’s book, Stop Alzheimer’s Now, focuses on this vital issue. In his book the author reveals numerous possible causes of neurodegeneration and offers the reader solid solutions, many of which are based on hard science. I found the information in this book to be very hopeful, in a constructive and practical way. The usual explanation for the drastic rise in Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative disease, is that we are faced with an aging population. It is implied that this poor state of health goes hand in hand with the aging process. Dr. Fife firmly refutes this lame reasoning…. “Dementia and other forms of neurodegeneration are not a part of the normal aging process. You should not expect to develop dementia as you grow older. The mind is fully capable of functioning normally for a lifetime, regardless of how long a person might live. While aging is a risk factor for neurodegeneration, it is not the cause! Dementia and other neurological conditions are disease processes that can be prevented and treated. This book will show you how you can hold on to your mental faculties for your entire life.”
The question arises as to why we are lumping all of these emerging diseases together. What process or reaction connects them? Fife narrows this subject of investigation down to the renegade molecules we call free radicals. He tells us that these molecules don’t just suddenly attack us and immediately cause disease but that the cumulative effect over a lifetime can be what causes many of our health problems. He goes on to inform us just how important our diet is in relation to free radical formation and how this process affects different parts of the body, including the brain.
Fife suggests that whenever we think of neurodegeneration we should immediately ponder its relation to diabetes and more specifically, insulin resistance. “Insulin does a lot more than regulate blood sugar. Insulin plays a role in normal cognitive function. Dysregulation of insulin increases risk for cognitive impairment, Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases. Recent studies confirm that diabetes leads to a significant cognitive decline and increases the risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease by up to 150 percent. While research at this time has linked neurodegeneration in general and Alzheimer’s specifically to disturbances in insulin metabolism, other disorders such as vascular dementia, Parkinson’sdisease, Huntington’s disease, and ALS, also exhibit features suggesting insulin resistance as either an important underlying factor or as a contributor to the initiation and progression of the disease.”
The author also warns us that the size of our waistlines is related to dementia and that the more weight we carry in this area, the greater the risk we have of acquiring dementia when we enter our 70s. John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health found that obesity increases our risk of dementia by 42 percent, Alzheimer’s by 80 percent and vascular dementia by 73 percent. Dr. Fife discusses other factors leading to neurodegeneration which include drugs, environmental toxins, toxic metal accumulations, and infections. I was particularly interested in his mention of the spreading epidemic of Lyme disease as one of the possible causes of dementia. He mentioned Judith Miklossy’s important studies which show that infection of the brain with spirochetes (including the Lyme spirochete), Chlamydia and Herpes, is frequently associated with Alzheimer’s.
The author brings all of this information together to form the basis of the “Alzheimer’s Battle Plan.” Fife feels that ketone production, through a low carbohydrate diet and the use of coconut oil, can provide the brain with a reliable source of energy with which to function. When a person has Alzheimer’s disease, the brain has difficulty metabolizing glucose, so another source of brain fuel needs to be substituted. Dr. Fife sums up the objectives of this therapy. “This dietary program produces enough ketones to supply the brain with the fuel it needs to function properly. In addition, it enhances insulin sensitivity, normalizes metabolic parameters, neutralizes neurotoxins, calms inflammation, stops runaway oxidative stress and destructive glycation, and subdues harmful microorganisms.”
Stop Alzheimer’s Now is a very comprehensive book and the author presents fundamental information in a very interesting and easy to understand manner. This book contains everything you need to know to prevent and help reverse Alzheimer’s, diabetes and or insulin resistance, and other degenerative diseases. The book includes carbohydrate counters, recommended supplements, lists of foods to include and to avoid and delicious sounding recipes to help you incorporate the food suggestions into your diet. There is so much helpful information that I have only touched upon some of the basic points. It is my opinion that Stop Alzheimer’s Now is Dr. Bruce Fife’s best work yet. It is one of the most important books I have read and I recommend it to everyone. The tools we need to turn things around are being rediscovered and presented. Let’s begin today to prevent what appears to be humanity’s spiraling descent into disabling illness, early death and possible extinction.
